What is GEO?

GEO is a new label for an old problem: being the business that gets named when somebody asks for a recommendation.

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. At Red Robot, it means improving how clearly and consistently a business is represented across its website, search presence and the other trustworthy sources AI systems may draw on when generating an answer. It works on the inputs those systems read — your website, your business listings, your reviews and the other places you are described — because the systems themselves cannot be edited.

Why it is different from ranking

A search engine returns a list and the customer chooses. A generative system returns a short answer naming two or three businesses, and everyone else is not ranked lower — they are absent.

That changes what optimisation means. There is no position to climb. There is only whether a system knows enough about you, from enough independent places, to be willing to say your name.

What GEO actually involves

Almost all of it is unglamorous and most of it is not new. It is the same information hygiene that has always helped, applied with the assumption that a machine rather than a person is doing the reading.

  • Entity clarity — one name, one address, one description of the work, everywhere
  • Structured information that matches what is visible on the page
  • Topical depth — pages that cover what you do rather than mentioning it
  • Corroboration — the same facts confirmed somewhere that is not your website
  • Reviews and reputation, a common corroborating source
  • Content written in the words customers actually use
  • A site AI crawlers are permitted and able to read

The limits, stated plainly

No agency controls what an AI system says. These models change, weight sources differently, and can answer the same question two ways on the same day. Anyone guaranteeing a mention is guaranteeing something they cannot see, let alone control.

What is controllable is whether you are findable, readable, verifiable and consistent. That is a real body of work and it is worth doing — it is simply not the same thing as a promise.

How to tell where you stand

Ask. Put the questions your customers would ask to an AI assistant and note who gets named. If it is never you, that is a measurement rather than a mystery, and it gives you a before.

That is exactly what our free AI visibility check does, across eight questions, with the answers written up.

Questions

Is GEO worth doing for a small business?
It is worth knowing where you stand, which costs nothing. Whether it is worth investment depends on whether your customers are asking assistants for recommendations yet — in some trades they clearly are, in others not much.
Does schema markup guarantee AI visibility?
No. Structured data removes ambiguity about what your pages say. It does not oblige any system to use them.
How long does GEO take?
Longer than people expect. These systems reflect a picture of the web that updates on its own schedule, so changes made today are not visible tomorrow.
