GEO vs SEO

Three acronyms, one underlying job: be the business that comes up. They differ in who is doing the coming-up.

SEO optimises for ranking in a list of links. AEO optimises for being the direct answer to a question. GEO optimises for being named inside an answer an AI system generates. They overlap heavily — most of the underlying work serves all three — but they fail differently, which is why the distinction is useful.

The comparison

The columns matter more than the labels. What is being optimised, and what is doing the reading.

SEO, AEO and GEO compared
ApproachPrimary purposeTypical focusHow it fails
SEOSearch visibilitySearch engines and ranked linksYou rank below the fold and nobody scrolls
AEODirect answersAnswer-oriented systemsYour answer is buried under three paragraphs of preamble
GEOGenerative visibilityAI assistants generating an answerYou are not named at all, and there is no position to check

Where they overlap

Almost everywhere. A fast, well-structured site with clear information and genuine topical depth helps all three, and no serious version of any of them contradicts the others.

Anybody selling GEO as a replacement for SEO is selling a rebrand. The reason to name them separately is that they fail in different ways, and you cannot fix a failure you cannot see.

Which to start with

Start with whichever is failing. If customers cannot find you in ordinary search, that is where the loss is. If they find you but the assistant they asked first never mentioned you, that is a different problem with a different fix.

For most small businesses the honest order is: make the site readable, answer the real questions, make sure the business information is consistent everywhere — then worry about which acronym you were doing.

Questions

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?
There is real overlap, and some of what is sold as GEO is a rebrand. The genuine difference is that generative answers name a few businesses rather than ranking many, so absence rather than position is the failure.
Can I do all three at once?
Largely, yes — most of the work is shared. The differences show up in emphasis rather than in separate projects.
