What is AEO?
People ask questions now instead of typing keywords. AEO is what you do about it.
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. At Red Robot, we use it to describe the practice of structuring content so answer engines and AI assistants can more easily understand and use it: the question as a heading, a complete answer in the first sentence beneath it, and the supporting detail afterwards.
The shape of an extractable answer
Put the question where a machine can see it is a question — a heading, in the words a person would use. Answer it immediately and completely. Then explain.
The test is whether somebody who reads only the first sentence has been told the truth. If the first sentence is a wind-up, there is nothing to extract.
Conversational and voice-style queries
Spoken questions are longer and more specific than typed ones. "Who does workflow automation near Franklin" is a different string from "workflow automation", and a page written only for the second answers neither well.
Writing in the way customers speak is not a trick. It is the same advice good copywriters have given for decades, now with a second audience.
Where FAQ content helps and where it hurts
A FAQ built from real questions is among the most useful things on a small business site. A FAQ built to be marked up is obvious, and marking up questions that are not visible to a visitor is against search-engine guidance — a risk to the whole site rather than to one page.
The rule we follow is that FAQ structured data appears only where the questions are on the screen.
How AEO sits beside SEO and GEO
AEO is usually the cheapest of the three to act on, because it mostly rearranges content that already exists.
| Approach | Primary purpose | Typical focus |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search visibility | Search engines and ranked links |
| AEO | Direct answers | Answer-oriented systems and featured responses |
| GEO | Generative visibility | AI assistants writing an answer |
Questions
- Does AEO replace SEO?
- No. Answer engines lean heavily on pages conventional search already surfaces, so a page nobody can find is not rescued by being well formatted.
- How many FAQs should a page have?
- As many as it genuinely gets asked. Three real questions beat twelve invented ones, and invented ones are increasingly easy to spot.
